Abstract

Duane syndrome is a congenital ocular motility disorder caused by hypoplasia or agenesis of the abducens nerve, leading to limited outward gaze. The article reports the case of a 1-year-old child with inward strabismus in the left eye, with MRI showing the absence of the left abducens nerve.

There are three types of Duane syndrome:

  1. Type 1: Inward strabismus with loss of outward gaze.

  2. Type 2: Outward strabismus with limited inward gaze.

  3. Type 3: Limitations in both gaze movements.

Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical evaluation, but MRI aids in confirming abducens nerve agenesis. Treatment typically involves surgery to correct strabismus. High-resolution MRI is useful in the diagnosis and management of this syndrome.
