Abstract

SUMMARY

Objectives: To describe sonographic findings of thyroid focal lesions and to evaluate the role of Thyroid Imaging Reporting and
Data System (TIRADS) in predicting the malignancy of thyroid focal lesions.
Material and methods: Prospective study on 180 patients. Thyroid focal lesions were scored by using TIRADS. The sonographic
findings were compared with pathological results.
Results: Solid was the most sensitive sonographic indicator of malignancy (93.8%), while the most specific indicator was the
taller-than-wide sign (98.2%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of TIRADS
in predicting the malignancy of thyroid focal lesions were 87.5%, 92.1%, 51.9%, 98.7% and 91.7%, respectively.
Conclusion: TIRADS is a simple score which is easy to apply in clinical practice with high diagnostic accuracy.
